Press Release: Sustainability Coaching Coalition

Sustainability Coaching Coalition formed from the JGSG

The Sustainability Coaching Coalition (SCC) represents a collective of global professional bodies who are collaborating for a sustainable and regenerative future. The coalition holds a position of radical hope in cultivating optimism and inviting action to drive systemic sustainability.

This historic collaboration brings together a group of leading associations in the areas of coaching, coaching psychology, mentoring and supervision (see list below) to co-create ways to utilize our professions to address the collective environmental, social, and ecosystemic needs facing the world.

The SCC is the evolution of the former JGSG-Joint Global Statement Group on Climate Change, which was a historic collaboration initially formed in 2020 by representatives of a group of coaching associations who came together to create a call to action for the coaching community through the creation of the original Joint Global Statement on Climate Change.

Since 2020, the JGSG grew from the initial five organizations to thirteen who have been meeting quarterly to share best practices and collaborate on educational opportunities to increase awareness in how coaching and mentoring can help address the climate crisis. This gathering has been unique in the industry as it is the first time that the major accrediting associations have collaborated for a common purpose.

A key offering of the JGSG has been a series of Roundtable Discussions that have been open to all members of the thirteen Signatories and to the broader coaching community. During the sessions, a panel shares insights on various themes and participants share their perspectives to enhance global knowledge and increase understanding of the topics.

The Evolution of the JGSG to the SCC and the Broadening of Scope

In 2024, the JGSG held Strategic Planning sessions to determine how the collaboration should evolve to meet the increasingly complex climate crisis. During the discussions, the group increasingly recognised the interconnectedness of how climate change affects the other environmental, ecological and social needs in the world, as represented in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs were created in 2015 to address the collective needs of people, planet, and all elements of the ecology (with Climate Action being Goal 13) to create a sustainable future.

The strategic process led to a determination that the group should broaden the scope of the work to address this interconnectedness, and that a new name should be created to describe this expansion of purpose. A working team was formed to draft an updated joint statement and create options for the name and branding.

Through a highly collaborative process, the name of Sustainability Coaching Coalition was adopted, along with a mission statement of “Global Bodies Collaborating for a Sustainable Future”. The name intends to create a strong connection with the UN SDGs, and the new logo places a tree as the central symbol of sustaining life, with a sun rising in the clear blue sky to represent a healthy ecosystem where all life can thrive.

The updated joint-statement document honours the cooperative work on climate change that has been accomplished to this point and speaks to furthering our collective opportunity to help address the global ecosystemic needs of people, planet, and all forms of life.

The thirteen professional body Signatories each went through an approval process with their respective internal leadership to review the updated document and name/branding to vote to continue supporting the effort. On 23rd May 2025 the final Signatory gained approval, formalizing the new joint-statement as fully adopted.
